Grift Web

At the risk of poisoning the well, I am dubbing the various technologies that make up "Web3" as "Grift Web" these include cryptocurrencies, NFTs, DAOs, and anything blockchain related.

Devil's Advocacy

Criticism of Web3 technologies abound and the political winds constantly shift in their favorability. I have attempted to pursue positive examinations of the technology while avoiding the evangalists.

  1. No Ethical Activism Under Capitalism: DAOs, DeFi, and Purity Politics by Emmi Bevensee at the Center for a Stateless Society examines the idea of repurposing these tools for radical activism
  2. Don't Let Reality Catch You Slippin' by Emmi Bevensee at the Center for a Stateless Society. Not explicitly about Grift Web, but an excellent companion piece to the first article.
  3. Real Problems Web3 Solves by Bill Prin argues that Web3 can be used for decentralized user authentications getting us away from Google/Facebook OAUTH schemes.
  4. Real Problems Web3 Solves by Brill Prin argues that Web3 can be used to create open markets
  5. The Satoshi Nakamoto Institute was also recommended to me since it does contain the holy words of Satoshi Nakamoto and you might as well go back to the source.

Neutral Examinations

  1. Beyond the Shouting Match: What isa Blockchain Really? by Chris Lemmer-Webber takes a rather neutral approach at explaining what the foundational technology behind blockchain is.
  2. A Furry's Guide to Cryptocurrency by Soatok

Criticism of Grift Web

  1. The Case Against Crypto by Stephen Diehl examines the pitfalls of cryptocurrencies as a currency.
  2. The Web3 Fraud by Nicholas Weaver explains the technological limitations of Etherium as a distributed computing system -- it's processing capabilities being several times less powerful than a Raspberry Pi with a computational cost 25 times more than simply buying one.
  3. NFT's Aren't the Answer to IRL Problems of Digital Art by Jacques Corby-Tuech examines the problem that NFTs are attempting to address and how they fail at it.
