8670 Hours

8,760 Hours1 is a process for reviewing the year and setting new goals and plans for the coming year.

  • 8760 Hours introduced me to the idea of [[Mind Mapping]]
  • Vemeer has twelve life "areas" that are reflected upon in the review: Value & Purpose, Contribution & Impact, Location & Tangibles, Money & Finances, Career & Work, Health & Fitness, Education & Skill Development, Social Life & Relationships, Emotions & Well-Being, Character & Identity, Productivity & Organization, Adventure & Creativity.
  • First, create a snapshot of your life. Vemeer has a good list of questions to asks yourself. He also suggests rating the life areas on a likert scale and evaluating where you are today as you sit to complete the review.
  • Second. Plan an ideal future. Ask yourself what would you like your ideal life to look like. Then plan out the next year identifying what you could do to bring yourself closer to that ideal life. Also note any new skills you will be working towards over the next year.
  • Vemeer then has a solid list of tools to help make this happen.

Upsides

  • Rather exhaustive examination of your life in the last year and year to come.
  • Does a solid job of trying to identify personal values and attaching them to personal goals throughout the year.

Downsides

  • Somewhat overkill. I spent a lot of time working out goals and plans for the new year that I never executed on and frequently abandoned by the next month as my life goals changed.
